As part of this project, the promotion of short sea shipping with the inclusion of inland waterway transport is to be prioritised. The aim of the project is to develop a short sea strategy that links short sea shipping with onward transport within Germany (hinterland) via inland waterways. The focus is on shifting freight transport from roads—particularly large and heavy goods transports—to coastal and inland waterways (Measure 2.34 of the National Port Strategy), as well as developing innovative approaches to modal shift. This is intended to help achieve climate goals and relieve pressure on road infrastructure. The project primarily considers aspects related to waterways and inland shipping.

The project is initially being funded for three years by the Federal Ministry for Transport.
