The winners of the “Outstanding Academic Maritime Teaching” competition will be honoured on 1 December 2020 at the opening of the renowned Bremen Shipping Congress (Bremer Schifffahrtskongress).
The German Maritime Centre will award the prize for the first time. Students have nominated the lecturers and professors who have shown above-average commitment to them and their subject, who have taught them basic principles, practical skills and academic abilities with a view to real-world application and who have prepared them optimally for their entry to the working world. The award comes with prize money that is to be used for a specific teaching purpose.
With the competition, we want to promote academic maritime teaching in Germany, increase the visibility of the subjects and support the exemplary commitment of teaching staff to teaching and students.
Maritime education includes many courses of study: nautical science, transportation, shipbuilding, marine technology, maritime transport and port management, logistics, mobility, underwater archaeology, ship operation technology, maritime law, the chemistry and biology of the sea, maritime technologies – these are just some of the subjects taught by the nominees.
On 1 December 2020, you can expect an opening address from Dr. Claudia Schilling, Senator for Science and Ports of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. We will introduce you to the award winners, and the three presenters – Gesine Appel (Schleswig-Holstein), Ute Meißner (Free Hanseatic City of Bremen) and Dr. Sigrid Meyer (Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg) – will explain the jury’s choice. Claus Brandt, Managing Director of the German Maritime Centre, will moderate the event.
Background information: The German Maritime Centre is a cooperation partner in the 14th Bremen Shipping Congress, which is titled “The Future of Maritime Education in Europe.
